In single-player mode, your goal is to collect the flags in each level while exchanging fire with the bad guys. Every hit from them weakens your shields a little, but luckily, you can charge them up by running over special dumps on the field which also replenish your weapons. You can play from three perspectives (overhead, first person, and from slightly behind your tank), and the graphics are basic vector shapes. There are also various buildings scattered around the field for you to hide behind.
The bad guys get tougher with the higher levels, but you also get extra weapons in the form of grenades which complement your missiles. The basic bad guys pretty much guard the flags and wait for you to come to them, but the stronger ones are more aggressive and will seek you out as soon as the level begins. It's best to deal with them before moving to the others, because their shots are much more powerful and will wipe you out pretty fast.
This is not an easy game to master in the higher rounds. In fact, I'd say that the computer intelligence running the opposition in this game is some of the toughest I've ever played against. They're pretty smart, even smarter than some of the drones in shoot-em-ups such as Doom.
There is also a networked version of the game; you can also play a flag rally option in which the goal is to grab as many flags as you can, or you can team up with others against the computer.
Graphics: Blocky vector shapes; they serve their purpose.
Sound: Covers the basics.
Enjoyment: It's still fun for me after all these years.

A fun frag-fest that pays homage to the arcade classic Battlezone, Spectre is a fun multiplayer 3D tank game that features a great capture-the-flag mode, cool futuristic graphics, and intuitive interface. Although the computer AI is capable, the game is very addictive in multiplayer mode. Spectre VR updates the original Spectre 2 years later with better graphics and more tank types to choose from.
