Game developer Digital Illusions on Thursday stole a bit of thunder from publisher Aspyr Media Inc. when it announced that Aspyr is developing and will publish and distribute a Macintosh version of Battlefield 1942. Digital Illusions is the game’s original developer.
Originally released for the PC in September, 2002 by Electronic Arts, Battlefield 1942 brings players to World War II as they fight battles at Midway, on the beaches of Normandy, in the deserts of North Africa and in Japan. It’s a first-person shooter (FPS) that has differentiated itself from the crowded World War II-themed FPS market with expansive online gaming features with the ability to control airplanes, tanks and aircraft carriers. The game’s popularity on the PC has spawned expansion packs and a standalone sequel that brings players to the jungles of Vietnam.

Since Digital Illusions’ announcement, Aspyr has confirmed the news — the package will be called Battlefield 1942 Deluxe Edition, and will include both the original Battlefield 1942 and an expansion pack called The Road to Rome, which adds new maps, vehicles and more fighting forces. Aspyr Studios, Aspyr’s in-house development team, is doing the conversion itself.
